ViceDean of the University of Michigan Medical School visited ShanghaiMedical College of Fudan University

OnNovember 10, 2023, Dr. Joseph Kolars, Vice Dean of the MedicalSchool, University of Michigan, and Dr. Yan Huang, Director of theAsian Program of the Medical School, visited Shanghai Medical Collegeof Fudan University. Dr. Fan Wu, Vice Dean of Shanghai MedicalCollege, welcomed the delegation and reviewed the history of medicaleducation cooperation between the two universities.

Dr.Joseph Kolars introduced an overview of the Medical School of theUniversity of Michigan and expressed his hope to further expandcooperation with Shanghai Medical College in teaching, research, andmedical services. Dr. Yan Huang provided an overview of the currenteight-year joint medical student training program between the MedicalSchool of the University of Michigan and other domestic medicalschools, including the program model, student selection process, andfunding support for the program. Dr. Hongyang Xu, Deputy Director ofShanghai Medical College introduced the overall situation ofinternational exchanges and cooperation at Shanghai Medical College.

Dr.Fan Wu stated that the two schools have a good foundation forcooperation and can further strengthen cooperation in variousaspects, including teaching, research, and international exchanges inthe field of medicine. Dr.Fan Wu proposed two areas of cooperation:1) the short-term clinical student exchange program; 2)the jointtraining program for clinical eight-year medical students, providinga new path for the school to enhance medical education reform andoffering students a better international platform for broadeningtheir horizons and comprehensive development. She also brieflyintroduced the construction of the “think tank” atShanghai Medical College and expressed her hope of research,education, and “think tank cooperation” with theUniversity of Michigan in the field of global health. The goal, shestated, is to cultivate high-level and multi-talented individuals, inglobal health governance, promote the construction of a global publichealth policy think tank, and establish an interdisciplinary teachingand research network through global cooperation.

Themeeting also had extensive discussions on the feasibility of medicaltalent cultivation and cooperation projects in medical education.Representatives from Fudan University's Graduate School of Medicine,Medical Affairs Office, International Cooperation Office, School ofPharmacy, and School of Basic Medical Sciences participated in thediscussions held during the visit.
