The “Shanghai Medical Summit 2022” was held on the 23rd of October 2022 to commemorate the 95thanniversary of the founding of Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University. The main themes of the Summit were “Cooperation, Innovation and Progression” and comprised of both online and offline activities. The Summit was divided into two main parts: the Keynote Report and the Round Table.
Dr. Daxiang Wen, Directorof the Shanghai Municipal Health Commission; Dr. Li Jin , President of Fudan University, Dean of Shanghai Medical College, Director of Human Phenome Institute; Associate Prof. Xin Li , Deputy Director of the Department of Foreign Expert Services; Dr. Jonathan Weber, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Imperial College London , Director of the Imperial College Academic Health Science Centre (AHSC) ; Dr. Jeremy Nicholson, Pro Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences at Murdoch University, Australia; Dr. Minghui Ren, Assistant Director-General for Universal Health Coverage, Communicable and Noncommunicable Diseases at WHO; Dr. Peng Gong,Vice-President and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic Development) of the University of Hong Kong ; Dr. Zhimin Chen, Vice President of Fudan University; Dr. Zhenghong Yuan, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Fudan University, Secretary of the Party Committee of the Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University; Dr. Fan Wu , Deputy Dean of Shanghai Medical College, Fudan University,President of Shanghai Preventive Medicine Association, Director of WHO Collaborating Center for Healthy City; Dr. Ying Mao, President of Huashan Hospital at Fudan University, and other party and government leaders attended the summit. The event was hosted by Dr. Changjian Jiang; Associate Professor at the School of International Relations and Public Affairs of Fudan University.
During the celebratory atmosphere of October, Shanghai Medical College received heartfelt congratulatory videos from several universities and organizations around the world, including Ain Shams University, the Bethune Medical Development Association of Canada, the University of Cologne, Harvard University , the University of Monterrey, the University of Melbourne, U21, the University of Sydney and many others. Along with their warm congratulations towards Shanghai Medical College, they also conveyed their expectations of continued future cooperation.
Dr. Daxiang Wen congratulated Fudan University on the 95th anniversary of the founding of Shanghai Medical College and expressed his gratitude towards the experts who have selflessly contributed to the medical cause. He stated that the Summit, an innovative way to rethink and re-practice the ideals of the National report, would help cultivate high-quality medically trained individuals, improve the level of medical services, and better meet the health needs of the people.
Dr. Zhenghong Yuan expressed his gratitude towards the guests for their participation. He spoke of the shared destiny between Shanghai Medical College, China and its people over the past 95 years as well as the leading role of Shanghai Medical College when it comes to medical training, research and innovation. He pointed out that despite the fact that the world is still under the tremendous impact of the COVID-19 epidemic, Chinese Medical Schools and Global Partnershave continued to show their enthusiasm to carry out mutually beneficial cooperation and explore global solutions. He said that Shanghai Medical College would take the 95th anniversary as a new starting point and continue to strengthen solidarity, cooperation, and multilateral participation. During the Keynote session, Dr. Peng Gong gave a speech titled Cross-disciplinary Collaboration, The Key to Addressing Environmental Health Challenges, and spoke of the unknown effects of environment changes on human health and the need to establish a better quantitative model to evaluate these effects. Dr. Jonathan Weber, used the theme of “Innovation, Collaboration and Progression” to share how Imperial College was able to overcome obstacles through multidisciplinary and inter-agency cooperation.
Dr. Jeremy Nicholson gave a speech on the topic Facing Current and Emergent Healthcare Challenges in the 21st Century - From People to Populations. He pointed out the different factors that would continue to affect human disease phenotypes. Dr.Zhimin Chen spoke on the topic Bridging Medical and Social Sciences, Promoting Innovative Global Cooperation. He spoke of the need for integration of medical science and humanities to improve modern medicine at Fudan University and the willingness to continue to explore the new mode of Medical and Cultural Integration of Medicine+.During the Round-Table session, the four speakers above and four University and College leaders, including Dr. Li Jin , Dr. Zhimin Chen, Dr. Fan Wu and Dr. Ying Mao, focused their discussions on medical education and sustainable advancement goals to carry out in-depth exchanges on key issues.
Today, Universities play an important role as the junction of science, technology, and cross-cultural communication. Shanghai Medical College aims to take the 95th anniversary as the starting of a new era, strive to gather the wisdom of all individuals and organizations involved and continue to make contributions to the innovation of medical education concepts, regionally and globally.
