From August 27 to September 4, 2024, Professor Fan Wu, Vice Dean of Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University, led a delegation to participate in the U21 Health Sciences Group (U21-HSG) Annual Meeting. The delegation visited the Amsterdam University Medical Center (Amsterdam UMC) in the Netherlands, the European Office of the World Health Organization (WHO), Karolinska Institute, and the University of Gothenburg in Sweden. These visits not only strengthened the existing friendship between Shanghai Medical College and leading medical institutions in Europe but also opened up broad prospects for deepening international exchanges and advancing medical cooperation in the European region.
U21-HSG: Strengthening the Dialogue surrounding Global Health
The delegation led by Dr. Fan Wu was invited to participate in the U21-HSG annual meeting held in Amsterdam, Netherlands from August 27th to 29th, 2024. As a member university of U21-HSG, Fudan University has long been actively involved in its organizational activities. During the meeting, Dr. Fan Wu engaged in detailed dialogues with regard to health sciences with deans from medical schools around the world, enhancing regional communication in areas such as medical education and public health governance. This effort aimed to deepen the exchange of information and experiences at both national and regional levels, while strengthening international collaboration and strategic communication.
Amsterdam UMC: Exploring New Pathways for Education and Clinical Collaboration
On August 29, the delegation visited the Amsterdam University Medical Center (Amsterdam UMC) and engaged in discussions with Prof. Yvo Roos, Dean of the Medical Faculty; and Prof. Suzanne Geerlings, Vice Dean of Education and Training Medicine at the University of Amsterdam. They explored topics such as introducing faculty training programs and facilitating exchanges between teachers and students. During the meeting, Dr. Fan Wu introduced the clinical medicine program at Fudan University and expressed hope that this visit would allow both parties to learn from each other's advanced experiences in medical education and clinical practice, thereby enhancing collaboration and improving the quality of medical training.
Following the meeting, the delegation toured various departments at the medical center to gain a deeper understanding of the clinical management system at Amsterdam UMC.
WHO European Office: Exploring New Opportunities for Global Health Cooperation
During their time in Europe, the delegation also made a special trip to Denmark to visit the European Office of the World Health Organization (WHO). They held discussions with Dr. Hans Kluge, World Health Organization Regional Director for Europe; and Dr. Gauden Galea, Strategic Advisor and Director of the Division of Noncommunicable Diseases and Life-course at WHO/Europe. The talks focused on establishing strategic cooperation between Shanghai Medical College and the WHO European Office, presenting practical ideas and plans for collaboration.
Both parties reached a consensus on deepening relations in areas of professional development and disease control. In the near future, Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University will work closely with the WHO European Office to jointly promote the advancement of global health initiatives.
